In the early days of my own discipleship, I was advised to ‘…read a psalm a day…’. For many months I did, and I found that the ancient words had relevance for my everyday life.
Here’s my interpretation of Psalm 2:
Psalm 2 – A song to remind earthly powers who it is they serve
Do you see the folly of the flexing nations and the plotting peoples?
Earthly rulers exalt themselves,
and leaders advise each other at their scheduled meetings,
but ignore and oppose the purposes of God,
and the One whom God anoints.
They speak like this:
‘Let us smash them to pieces – nothing can hinder us
Let us overturn them – we cannot be thwarted.’
My Almighty Father cannot help Himself laughing!
‘Who do you think you are?’ He shakes His head, amused.
And then He speaks in angry tones
terrifying those who bring their own terror on earth
‘THERE IS A KING WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN
WHOM I ANOINT
WHOSE RULE IS GODLY.
LOOK TO MY HOLY HILL – HIS THRONE IS THERE.’
I will be the one to speak out what I have heard God command:
I heard God say,
‘My Son – from this day on, you have Me as your Father.
Seek Me and My purposes, and the nations of the world will be promised to you.
I will give you the four corners of the globe.
You will bring them to their knees as with a rod of iron –
they who spoke of smashing others
will become as fragments of a broken pot, under your rule.’
Rulers and leaders take note, then,
hear the warning in all that is sung.
Remember with awe, with reverent fear –
it is the Almighty you’re called to serve
and sing…sing for joy all the time,
trembling over the responsibility upon your shoulders.
Sumbit yourselves before my Son, the Ruler,
with a kiss, humble yourselves.
Do nothing to anger Him, or to lead you on a path of destruction.
Believe me – don’t test His anger – you would not like to be on the receiving end!
What refuge, what wonderful peace, though,
for those who place their trust, their security in Him.
