Risk-Taking Mission & Service – Day 23

risk-taking-missionReading:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ (Luke 4 v. 18 – 19)

Reflection:
‘Risk-taking Mission and Service is one of the fundamental activities of church life that is so critical that failure to practice it in some form results in a deterioration of the church’s vitality and ability to make disciples of Jesus Christ. When churches turn inward, using all resources for their own survival and caring only for their own people, then spiritual vitality wanes. When churches turn outward, they come alive with a sense of purpose and transform the lives of their members and the communities they serve.’
What church outreach programmes make the greatest impact on the lives of people in your community who are not a part of your church?
How do you suppose your congregation is perceived by those in the community who have little power – the poor, the unemployed, the immigrant?

Prayer:
Lead us, we pray, in the ways of justice,
mercy and peace.
Inspire us to live for all,
to assist in ways open to us
to alleviate the suffering of others.
AMEN.

Challenge:
List two critical unmet needs in your community that reveal brokenness and suffering.
Pray for your church, or another, to find ways to make a difference.
