Bible Month – Colossians – 22nd June 2019

‘Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of the one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.’
(Colossians 3 v. 15 – 17)

Continuing on from the analogy of ‘new garments’, Paul asks us, then, to look inside of ourselves – our ‘new selves’:
– HEARTS filled, ruled, directed, guided by PEACE (Shalom)
– WORD OF GOD rooted deeply within, and bearing fruit in words spoken, songs sung, and thanksgiving in our hearts

One of the commentators asks about the references here to music and song having a role to play in our ‘teaching and admonishing one another’, our wisdom and guidance towards each other. Have we stopped to consider how the music and songs we choose to listen to shape us.

Finally, a wonderful summary of all that has gone before, and all that will be contained in the final verses of the letter (the ‘ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS’) –
‘Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.’ (The Message)
